Grey's Anatomy 10.08 Review: We Don't Always Recognize When to Stop Ourselves

For all those that have yet to watch tonight’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, entitled ‘Two Against One’, then now would be your last chance to do so without the threat of spoilers. As always, this is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! You’ve been warned.
Can I just say how angry I am with this series? I mean, this is Cristina’s last year on the show, why do they have to go and through her and Mer’s relationship through a loop? Why are they trying to ruin it? From what I can recall of how last season ended, this wasn’t in the works, so why is this absolutely necessary? I can understand the occasional tiff, but all of this?
Other than my issue with that story narrative, this was a decent episode. There was some nice progression with Webber’s character that I quite enjoyed, some honest development to his story. There was also some quality Lorde playing in the background during a scene. I’m just curious to know why Alex thought Meredith couldn’t get the one tumour out. I mean why would she say she could do it just because Cristina said she wasn’t as good a surgeon as her? I’m also curious to know what is going on with Bailey. I thought this whole deal with the glove incident had been resolved last season, but here it is again, rearing its ugly head.
All in all, not a bad episode. There were some good points to it that I enjoyed, as well as some nice drama that is always evident in this series. It’s still quite an enjoyable show, for something in its tenth season, but the fact that a lot of the series regulars from years past are no longer in it, I worry that it won’t stay good for long after they all eventually begin to move on. That starts again this year with Yang, but who will it be next year?
My rating: 7 out of 10.

Best Lines:
“Did you hear Mer just revolutionized the world of cutlery?” – Karev asks Yang.
“He’s a guy in a bathrobe.” Harvey mutters about Webber’s vouching for Shepherd and Avery.
“If you want it faster, page God.” – Edwards tells Ross, regarding the 3D printer.

Okay, I’m off to watch The Crazy Ones now, check back soon for my review of that.

It's called The Blacklist - That Sounds Exciting

The drama series I’m most looking forward to this Fall would have to be The Blacklist. Strictly from watching the four-minute promo, I already love James Spader’s character Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington. From his snarky tone in the way he addresses the lawmen that have been after him the last twenty years, to his overall confidence in the fact that he gives himself over to the FBI and still expects things to be okay for him.

I’m also very much looking forward to following Megan Boone’s character Elizabeth Keen through this series. I mean, anyone who is willing to jeopardize their job by attacking the man that knows something about their husband, is someone I am very much willing to follow along with.

Overall, I think this show will be the breakout drama series this year. I know everyone is expecting that to be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – and don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to that series – but the obvious intensity that wafts off the screen in waves just instantly clicks with me, and hopefully with the rest of the audience.

Now that’s not to say there could be hitches along the way. This series definitely appears to be striving for a sense of perfection. Some A-list TV actors (James Spader, and I’m looking at you Harry Lennix), an intense mission statement (the whole blacklist situation), and a realistic yet interesting script (“It’s called the Blacklist. That sounds exciting.”). The devil’s advocate is that with perfection comes the extreme ability to fall. But if the series uses the promo as the example it means to set for our viewing standards, it is sure to impress and garner it’s own niche of TV followers.

To cap things off, I’ll leave you with my own pre-watch judgments on where I think the series will go. What I strongly predict from the promo alone is that Raymond is Elizabeth’s father, and he has possibly been following her along and pushing her in the direction of the FBI in anticipation of him cultivating the Blacklist. One other thing I also predict, although not quite as strongly, from merely the last thirty seconds or so of the promo is that Raymond is deep undercover, and has been the last twenty years, so that he could cultivate this list of his. If this happens to be the case, I think the only person that knows he’s undercover other than himself, would possibly be the POTUS.

Alright that’s all for now. Tune into The Blacklist on NBC September 23rd at 10 p.m. to check out if any of my predictions come to pass, and then check back here around 2 am EST (11 pm PST) for my review of the full-length pilot.

Most Promising New Series’ (in descending order):

Drama:

-       The Blacklist
-       Sleepy Hollow
-       Masters of Sex – it’s a cable show, but I think it’ll do well
-       Hostages – while I don’t think I’ll keep up with this series, I do think it’ll be a somewhat breakout hit

Comedy:

-       Brooklyn Nine-Nine

New Series I’m Most Looking Forward to (in descending order):

Drama:

-       The Blacklist
-       Dracula – I know there are enough vampires in the media right now, but this is Dracula we’re talking about, and how can you pass Jonathan Rhys Meyers?
-       Almost Human
-       Sleepy Hollow – who doesn’t love a good mythology? Just me?
-       Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
-       The Originals

Comedy:

-       Brooklyn Nine-Nine
-       The Crazy Ones – I love SMG, big Buffy fan!
-       Trophy Wife – Malin Akerman is amazing, ditto to Bradley Whitford
-       Enlisted – Chris Lowell is hilarious!

Series I’m Most Likely to Lose Interest In (in descending order):

Drama:

-       Reign – It’s a rehashed, medieval Gossip Girl, but I liked the first couple seasons of that show, so…
-       The Tomorrow People – I love Aaron Yoo, and Luke Mitchell seems to be a promising actor, but I’m not giving this show much hope
-       Hostages
-       Lucky 7 – it could go the way of Third Watch, but I don’t think it’ll withstand
-       Betrayal
-       Once Upon a Time in Wonderland – split days, and OUAT’s terrible scripts, I just don’t know

Comedy:

-       Enlisted
-       Welcome to the Family – I love a good teenage pregnancy story, but most of the writing doesn’t seem up to par

Most Likely to be Cancelled:

Before a Full Pick-up:

-       Lucky 7
-       Betrayal
-       Welcome to the Family – NBC is notorious for cancelling good comedies (Go On), so, while Mike O’Malley is a good actor/writer, the rest of this show doesn’t seem up to par
-       Reign – While it could fill the shoes left by Gossip Girl, it likely won’t last
-       Enlisted – I can’t see this show lasting

After the Back Nine:

-       The Crazy Ones – sadly, I don’t expect this one to last
-       Dracula – the world may well have its fill of vampires
-       Trophy Wife – I just have this feeling that this show won’t last
-       The Tomorrow People – it’s the CW, so it could go either way, but I don’t know
-       Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – while I do think it’ll do well, the price tag on the series could put it to bed
