American Horror Story: Coven 3.08 Review: Working Together

Anyone that has yet to watch last night’s episode of American Horror Story: Coven, titled ‘The Sacred Taking’, that is what I suggest you go and do now, before proceeding ahead. This is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! You’ve been warned.
There are so many sides to this series this season, it’s almost difficult to keep track. You’ve got the witches that everyone is – or at least I am – rooting for, then you’ve got the voodoo side where I only really like Marie Laveau, and then there’s Cordelia’s husband who is a witch hunter. Okay, so there are only three sides, but there are a lot of characters that go back and forth between them all. One of which is the witch/voodoo crossover kind of character Queenie. She’s one character I really can’t stand this season, a) because she’s grotesquely large, b) because she’s so damned whiny, and c) because she’s this selfish, oh woe is me kind of character that thinks she deserves more than everyone else – those kinds of characters really piss me off.
This episode, for the most part, really worked for me this week. We finally got to see most of our witch characters (including Misty Day) work together for once. I really enjoyed seeing the coven work together to bring Fiona down, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing all of them work together against the Voodoo priestesses. And I’m especially glad Fiona didn’t go all raging Supreme on them all for trying to take her down.
All in all, aside from a few choice cinematographic shots, this was a very well done, well-written episode. Despite how much I don’t like Queenie, I still really enjoyed the opening scene, and the storytelling that it brought with it. Seeing Kyle’s face light up with amazement when Zoe covered his ears with the headphones was beautiful, as well as when he managed to tell her he loved her, which also brought wonderful storytelling with it as Madison listened in, in tears. This episode had a great use of red, as Madison wore that colour dress to facilitate Fiona’s killing herself. Such a shocking use of the colour against the mostly black and white of that scene. This episode really had a lot going for it, despite it, or this season, living up to the Horror in its title.
My rating: 7.5 out of 10.

Best Lines:
“Maybe it’s a good thing you’re blind as a butter knife.” – Myrtle Snow relates to Cordelia.
“God knows it’s not getting any action from you, grandma.” – Madison remarks, regarding Fiona’s bed.
“I’m going to bring marshmallows and graham crackers to make smores.” – Madison explains what she’ll do when they bring Fiona to be burned for her crimes of killing another witch.

My apologies for not posting this yesterday, but here it is now. I’m off to watch The Vampire Diaries now, and afterwards Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Crazy Ones. Stay tuned.

Revenge 3.08 Review: Everyone Has Their Secrets

For all those that have yet to watch tonight’s episode of Revenge, entitled ‘Secrecy’, now would be a great time to do that before reading ahead. This is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! You’ve been warned.
Well, that wasn’t that bad of an episode at all. Quite a number of things happened that were deeply intriguing plot twists, as well as character twists. Going in I was worried that Emily wouldn’t figure out a way to split Daniel and Sarah up, being that they are much better suited for one another than Emily and Daniel, but she did end up pulling something out of her hat. We all know she isn’t actually pregnant, but the situation did cleverly fit all the little clues she left behind. I will definitely be interested in what way this ends up going in the long run. We do know Emily ends up being shot, but I’ll be curious to know if this faux pregnancy fits into where she was shot.
Another big character comeback this season, in the way of the formerly thought to be deceased Lydia. Someone just tell me that Victoria knew Lydia was alive. I suppose we won’t know until the next episode, but I certainly hope that she does, otherwise her being alive makes little sense. I am curiousity to see how this character return develops. The previews made it into Lydia seeking revenge, and by how it appeared, it seems she seeks it against Emily. Can someone clarify if she had a reason to do that? I haven’t watched the first season of this series since it aired, and I watch quite a number of series, so I can’t quite recall if Emily did anything to Lydia.
I’m really seeing the Jack, Emily, Aiden kind of love triangle more this week. Sure, Jack is with Margaux, but he obviously does still care a great deal for his childhood love. Once the fake death gets cleared, something will have to continue this series, so I doubt Emily’s going anywhere. These two men have a great deal of passion in them when it comes to Emily, so I hope this continues on going forward with the second act of this season because I’d love to see more of it.
The whole addition of the bachelor pad for Grayson men was a bit on the ridiculous side. It doesn’t surprise me that they would have it, but it felt like Conrad was leading up to something more interesting than a place he brought his mistresses. Also, I’m just a tad bit surprised Daniel would think to use it so soon – he’s not even married yet. And hadn’t Sarah said she wouldn’t go any further until Daniel had broken things off with Emily, but suddenly there is a woman settling in for the night as well? I find that a tad bit much.
Overall, I quite enjoy this soap opera of television. I do wish that Emily would be able to show a little bit more of a range of emotion, especially now that she’s faking pregnant, because her character is a little dry for my taste. While I am hopeful that she finds satisfaction in her revenge scheme, I find myself not being quite as intrigued by her character as I am the rest. Someone please tell me, though, that this series ends with people finding out who she is. The big reveal at the end of the series would be great because I think that’s what a lot of people stick around for. Oh, also, I have to say that I loved Emily’s hair during the bridal shower, not the dress, but the hair was gorgeous.
My rating: 7 out of 10.

Best Line:
“I am on the rebound, so, bitch, don’t kill my vibe.” – Nolan explains to Aiden.

All right, I’m off to watch Almost Human now, so check back soon for that review.

Once Upon A Time 3.08 Review: How Far Does the Apple Fall From the Tree?

Anyone that has yet to watch tonight’s episode of Once Upon A Time, entitled ‘Think Lovely Thoughts’, I suggest that you go and watch it now before proceeding ahead. This is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! You’ve been warned.
So, we found out who Peter Pan is, and let me just say, I saw that coming as soon as they introduced Rumplestiltskin’s father. Nevertheless, while it does wrap the characters up rather neatly, I’m not a fan of who they chose him to be. A lot of things from earlier episodes don’t make sense now to me, and the character doesn’t seem like the actor knew ahead of time that this was who he was going to end up being, and thus was unable to act accordingly. Plus I find myself liking Peter Pan less now that we’ve learned who he began as.
In my opinion, there was far too much Henry in this episode. I understand the need to use this character, but the actor is just not good enough to be in as many scenes as he is. I almost wish he was going to die, but we all know that’s not going to happen. When they get his heart back, could the magic of putting it back transform him into another actor? I’m pretty sure only if this kid got major acting lessons, or a legitimately talented child actor took over the role would I actually begin to like Henry too. It just sucks because I actually like the name Henry and this kid is ruining it for me.
While I do find that this episode felt like I got through it far too quickly, I am still beginning to get sick of Neverland. I’m a little bored of this arc because it doesn’t seem to be moving at the same pace as the amount of episodes we’ve had this season. By last week’s numbers, I don’t even think it’s been a week since they’ve gotten there, and too much has happened that it’s difficult to keep track of time. It’s making me a little delirious, and I’d really prefer to move onto to a story arc that isn’t based around Henry. As much as I did find Pan an intriguing villain up to this point, we’ve learned too much about him that I’m pretty much done with this arc. Can it be over soon, please?
All in all, not the worst writing they’ve had on this series, but they seem to be wrapping their characters up to neatly for my taste. Not only that, but the lack of continuity they seem to be able to grasp, even in this season alone is a little disconcerting. I mean, Rumple crying over and being surprised concerning the poppet-like doll because it reminded him of his father just makes little sense now that we all know he left it there. Really, this is another series that I watch that I honestly wish I could go in and clean house. Please, show runners, read a few negative reviews just so you can get some constructive criticism about how your series is going!
My rating: 6 out of 10.

Best Line:
“I’m not walking in there with nothin’ but my good looks.” – Rumplestiltskin states.

Okay, I’m off to watch and review Revenge now, so check back soon for that. Afterwards it’s the review of the series premiere of Almost Human. Stay tuned.
