Trophy Wife 1.11 Review: A Mid-Life Crisis

For all those that have yet to watch last Tuesday’s episode of Trophy Wife, entitled ‘The Big 5-0’, then now would be the perfect time to do that. This is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! You’ve been warned.

This episode revolved around Pete’s belief that celebrating his birthday, on his birthday, is cursed, and Kate goes to try and set that straight. A lot of crazy stuff happens, including some lobsters needing to be caught, and all in the name of good, sitcom-y fun.

This series is definitely an enjoyable show to watch. It’s all very exaggerated humour that would be unbelievable if it were to happen to anyone, but it’s all in the name of good fun. While I do find shows like Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and even The Crazy Ones have their moments where they step back, pull the curtain back, and give you a sense of genuine comedy, this is not one of those shows. Like I said, it’s all very exaggerated fun that shouldn’t be taken seriously. That makes this an easy show to sit through and laugh, and that’s definitely something I can use from time to time.

All in all, this episode fit right along the rest of this series outrageous sitcom circumstances. Probably my favourite parts to this episode involved the kids and having to catch the lobsters. I also liked when Hillary and Warren had to break it to Bert that he’s eaten everything he’s ever worn on pajamas. Basically, this show is just good fun.

“Ah, you’re almost out of eggs. You’re out of eggs.” – Meg says to Kate as she goes shopping in her kitchen.

“You’ve gotta think like a lobster. (Pause) Bingo.” – Warren explains, as he waddles along on the floor.

“Don’t you know that old expression: that you catch more flies with honey than by being a bitch?” – Jackie gives her take on the expression to Diane.

“Are you having my mid-life crisis?” – Pete asks Kate.

Trophy Wife 1.07 Review: The Overstepping of Boundaries

All those that have yet to watch last night’s episode of Trophy Wife, entitled ‘The Date’, now is the only time where I will suggest you go and watch it before reading ahead. This is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! You’ve been warned.

Before I get onto the review, let me just congratulate this series for getting a full season pick-up. I guess now I can finally settle in and get more attached to these characters.

Now that that’s out of the way, let me begin with the review. This week’s episode was more what I was looking for from a sitcom, mind you only three of the series’ I watch out of twenty are half-hour sitcoms. Maybe it’s that I’m finally being able to see how these characters all fit together or maybe the actors are finally feeling more comfortable in their roles and each other, but they’re seeming to mesh better than in previous weeks. Specifically Diane and Hillary’s mother-daughter relationship, which was really fun to watch in this week’s episode.

I really love the different styles of comedy to this series. The way Hillary is written with the dry sense of humour is great, being that it’s my own form of humour I tend to stick to. Bert has that cute kid kind of comedy to him that is just plain adorable, and then Jackie has that in your face, too close for comfort kind of comedy to her. The others have a mix of humour to them that just fits pretty well together.

 One thing I’d still like to see with this series is a bit more depth to the characters. Sure, we’re finally starting to see pieces of their personalities coming out, but I’m not completely seeing a range to these characters that was part of the reason I loved Friends so much. Comedies are still able to poke out the dramatics in times that are necessary while still holding their sitcom standing, and that’d be nice to see sometime soon.

All in all, this is a very easy comedy series. It doesn’t give me sidesplitting laughter like the new series The Crazy Ones, while it also doesn’t make me see mind-numbing stupidity in it like New Girl has gotten around to doing. By this I mean it’s an easy sitcom to turn on at random and still be able to enjoy without completely following it. So I’ll stick around to watch it as long as it keeps me entertained.

Best Lines:

“I like your face.” – Meg tells Pete’s coworker at the party.

“She’s not the boss of me, I’m older.” – Warren says. “Yeah, but I’m smarter.” – Hillary replies, after their mother leaves her in charge.

“I don’t think so, but I’m pretty drunk.” – Meg states, about not being the one in Pete’s office having sex with his coworker.

“I gotta rescrub. Rescrub!” – Pete yells, while him and Kate clean his office after the happenings of the party.

This review may seem a bit scattered, being that my roommate’s currently watching American Horror Story: Coven on the television right next to me, and it’s a bit distracting. But I think I did pretty well with this anyways, so here this is. I’ll be posting my brief review of New Girl in a few minutes, and probably Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. later on tonight. After that I’ll probably leave The Originals and Supernatural until tomorrow night.

Trophy Wife 1.04 Review: True Friendship Can Survive Harrowing Trials

Anyone that has yet to watch tonight’s episode of Trophy Wife, entitled ‘The Breakup’, then now would be a good time to go and do that. As always, this is not a spoiler free blog. THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! Proceed at your own discretion.

Not a bad episode of television. While I don’t think Trophy Wife will be winning any awards for writing or refreshing takes on life, it is a nice and easy sitcom to sit down and watch for half an hour.

The friendship between Kate and Meg was tested a bit in this week’s episode, something that must happen in all close relationships, when a new dynamic is explored. Sure, Meg isn’t the smartest person out there, but she balances out Kate nicely. I can really see, while not at a deep level, that these two women have been friends for a very long time. It’s not as easy to see as in long running series, like How I Met Your Mother, where the audience has seen the relationship develop over time, but there is a clear history there.

Hillary is beginning to get a little on my nerves though. While she may appear to be growing up to be just like her mother Diane, there is an obvious spoiled syndrome going on with her. Sure she’s seen her father going through two failed marriages, but she seems a little too anti Kate sometimes. It be nice to see her soften up to her once in a while.

As well, Diane has become a little too smothering. I get that the writers want to keep these ex-wives in and out of newly married Kate and Pete’s lives, but she’s encroaches a little too often into her children’s lives. Particularly this week with Warren, where she snoops on his studying at not her home, but his father’s. That was a little too much for her character, I think it’d be a good time to scale it back just a tad.

So, yes, this series needs some work when it comes to developing a little more depth to its characters, but the stories are nice and easy to follow along with. There are some easy laughs, and some funny characters that I do like in this show. The only problem with it is that I wouldn’t be heartbroken if it were cancelled.

“You want me to pee in another cup? I’ll do it!” – Meg shouts, claiming innocence over the ruined project.

“Are you talking about our honeymoon?” – Pete asks Meg, who says her best friend vanished for a week after the wedding.
